Village Out for Revenge

Mikey Sperm Contemplates Sitting Out a Game

Round 3 of the league season is upon up and West End Saints / the Mighty Village take on Kerala once more. A win for the Village on Thursday will go a long way to securing the title as we’ll be two wins ahead of them with 4 games to go.  Defeat will mean it’s two defeats each and all to play for with Carnival coming into play as they’ve only lost 2 as well.   Personally, I’m still reeling from the complete thumping we got off Kerala last time around, so we have something to put right and of course, we have to celebrate every wicket like we’ve just won the World Cup.  I know it's kind of petty and childish to imitate the other team but there you go.

The youthful element of our side returns for this one with Tom, Luke and Jonjo (combined age about 58) replacing Seasick Steve, Geoff (and his Baselayer Undergarment) and Clive (combined age 150+).  Luke is of course, back in the side as revenge is on our minds and we may need him to take one of them out with a shoulder charge like he did in the last time around.  The Guru is also back, replacing the Sprayer who threw his shoulder out winging it back to the keeper with extreme power, last week.
Team is:

1 Dayer
2 Tommy Tempah
3 The Guru
4 Skip Over the Cow
5 Spaul
6 The Hoo-bard
7 J de Vito
8 Luke ‘Chaaaaaaarge’ Blackwell
9 JJ Foxpiss
10 Mackem Robbie Catchit
11 Kevmac Arthy
12th Man: Joey Deacon
Drinks: David Blunkett
Groundsman: Stephen Hawking

Village Justify Deacon Non-Selection in Cow Corner Carnage

Deacon: Not Selected

Billy Shite at the LCG for the Daily Sporting Arse to watch Village Clash: The Sequel.  Table toppers they might be but the Mighty Village had a few problems today with a number of drop outs meaning that the average age was about 46.  The ‘anyone know any players’ appeal by the selection committee threw up such names as Joey Deacon and Stephen Hawking as potential like for like replacements for Jonjo and Lookie but they were unavailable through death and orbiting the moon respectively.  Two of the remaining relative youngsters, Spaul at 43 and Skip at 42, limped up to the ground and debated who was limping less and therefore, who would open the batting with Dayer.  Skip won the toss and decided to get it over with so in he went, due to Spaul’s more impressive limp, to face the Not-so-mighty Village Attack.
The slips were passing comment on the Skip’s antique Graeme Hick bat and soon shut up when he was served with couple of pies early on which he smashed to the boundary.  Dayer was taking a liking to the spinner from the other end (I use the term ‘spinner’ loosely) and powered him for three fours in one over.  Thus the tone was set with Dayer playing shots all round the wicket and the Skip playing almost exclusively over the cow, demonstrating an Eoin Morgan-like level of invention to get any ball of any length or line, over the cow.  The animal theme was in full swing when a Skip pull shot managed to hit a bloody great dog which was being walked round the boundary by a dozy bugger who ended up pushing the dog into the ball.  No harm done thankfully.
The momentum was building nicely but was thwarted by an all run 3 which left the Skip lying on the ground stretching his back and Dayer yelling ‘hit....a.....fucking....boundary’ in between gasps or sweet tasting Lordshill air.  The score motored on and desperation for a breakthrough set in, bringing with it, humourous lbw appeals.  There was one vociferous appeal after a forward defensive middle-of-the-bat push from Dayer which, if had had any more wood in it would have been a fucking tree.  Then an appeal comparable in it’s ridiculousness (is that a word?) against the Skip which at least hit the pad but as he’d backed away so far that the umpire could still see all 3 stumps, it was highly unlikely to be out.
With both batsmen in the 40s, acceleration was the order of the day and both tried and failed and perished in 2 balls as Dayer went long and not high enough and got caught for 42 and then Skip went high and not far enough and departed for 45.  Good catches both and so Spaul and the Jeweller de Vito were in.
They weren’t hanging about either and both hit a couple of fours with one delightful effort from Spaul going straight through a fielder and one from the Jeweller nearly ending in fielder injury as the berk dived into the sightscreen.  De Vito eventually holed out to another good catch to bring in Mackem Rob to swish and miss at two wides and a legal delivery and so the Mighty Village closed on 125-3, a score they would have settled for at the start.
The between innings interval was taken up with Dayer having a moan up about some of his runs allegedly going on the Skip’s score.  The scorecard has since been checked by an anally retentive lackey of mine and I’m pleased to report the integrity of the scorers (Mikey Sperm and the Jeweller) is intact and I can now categorically confirm that the Skip (45 off 37 balls) did score at a faster rate than the moaning git (42 off 41).
The think tank brains trust of Skip and Spaul were deep in conversation when setting the field, trying to hide 9 immobile fielders who can’t throw.  When they eventually gave up and just told everyone to spread out in a circle, the Jeweller and Mackem Rob kept it tight to immediately put Knowle Village well down on the required run rate.
Off the last ball of his second over, Mackem Rob got the breakthrough with a beautifully disguised slower ball which was far too good for the Knowle Village skipper who lost his timbers.  It was a bit like a JJ Fox slower ball other than that it wasn’t bowled with a different action and it didn’t come down with snow on it.... and it was straight... and it pitched on the green bit.
Wickets were needed and so Kevmac was brought on to bowl to their most dangerous hitter who mowed a four before flat batting a shot straight to the Jeweller on the boundary.  It was unlucky to pick out one of the two fielders who may have caught it but catch it he did and 2 men down.  Geoff, tightly packed into his 2nd skin was on and after one delivery of filth, settled down and pinged back off stump to bring the 3rd wicket.
It was roughly at this point that the fielding effort began to unravel with the old men of the Mighty Village realising that it was time for Horlicks and Sanatogen.  It started with a risky second run to the only fielder who could throw – a smooth pick up and throw by Mackem Rob and a complete bollocks of an effort to gather by the Skip, shocked at receiving a decent throw at above ankle height.  The inevitable insult that arrived almost as quickly as the ball, rhymed with plastic.
The Hoob was on and striving for his first wicket of the season and it looked like it was arriving as the ball was carved towards Dayer in the covers at catchable height.  Time stood still as Dayer positioned himself and the ball kind of swerved round him as he totally failed to get a touch.   One thing you learn when bowling for the Mighty Village is that you have to do all the work yourself so the Hoob did just that off the next ball, snagging a sharpish caught and bowled chance to get rid of the second opener, the 8 foot giant.
One thing that can always be relied on in the field is Mikey Sperm and his power arm, proving that being Quadroplegic is no impediment for fielding like a demon.  Rumour has it that he can Spray Sperm further than he can throw a ball and I know what my money would be on.  Spaul was standing very close at short mid-wicket as his knee hurt too much for him to walk away any further.  His close proximity to the bat was shown up when Geoff (deliberately) served up a slow full toss which was pulled straight into Spaul’s hands and down.  The look of horror when he realised that he didn’t have time to get out of the way was priceless.
Geoff and his base layer 2nd skin were into their 3rd over and into the groove, drawing the batsman out of his ground with flight and guile (a long hop) and the Skip eventually completed the stumping once he’d registered that he actually had the ball in his hands.  Two balls later and the base layer 2nd skin got even tighter in the excitement of another batsman being deceived, this time by a straight one.
The Jeweller came back on in an effort to snag maximum bowling points and he produced a quicker ball which was sent into orbit.  Skip called but Soldier Saunders called louder and more confidently and stood underneath it as it fell to earth, hit his hands and flopped onto the deck, accompanied by a high pitched ‘Nooooooooo’ from the suitably embarrassed Northern Maestro – a truly epic drop.
Two balls later and the ball was up in the air again and the Sperm Sprayer was faced with trying to take one of those difficult over-the-shoulder-ones.  How he thought he was ever going to do this with his arms out wide in a crucifix pose is completely beyond me.  It’s not exaggerating to say that a beach ball would have gone through and hit the deck.  The only chance of him catching it was if it fell into his open mouth.  The passing of this chance was notable for the lack of a North Eastern accent giving it the large one.
Taxi for de Vito as the Jeweller roared in like the Incredible Hulk without the green skin and took away all element of doubt with some serious stump flattening.  The pursuit of a bowling bonus point brought Robbie Drop back on and his over produced one chance off the last ball – a high hanging bomb which came down on top of Seasick Steve – he looked confident but he’s been possessed by the spirit of the Mighty Village and so turfed it.  87-7 at the end and a comfortable win.
Next week it all gets serious as the Mighty Village play the only team to have beaten them this year in Kerala.  The winners of this match will have one hand on the prestigious Southampton Evening League Division 5 trophy and Qualification for the Champions League and all the riches that entails.  The selection committee have selection issues with JJ Fox, Lookie, Tommy Tempah and the Guru all returning.  Injuries will have to be assessed for next week and as we reach the business end of the season, we must expect the Mighty Village to be ruthless with no room for sentiment.... or shit fielding.  They say ‘catches win matches’ because it rhymes... but it also happens to be true so there will be no Village victory parade next week if they butcher this number of dismissals again.  They have been warned.

Village v Village - The Sequel

The last game of the second round of matches sees the mighty West End Saints take on Knowle Village at Lordshill Rec.  Last time we played them they proved they could bat and they also proved that they could not bowl in the slightest with that legendary 21 ball over.  Will they have improved and if so, will they cause the Mighty Village some problems in addition to the ones they have of their own.  Last week Knowle Village were on the next pitch over and quite clearly had a girl bowling at about 90mph.... oh dear.

Despite being decimated by absentees, West End Saints CC aim to keep up their 100% record with regard to attendance.  Out go The Guru (implants), Jonjo Fox (RSI wrist injury), Tommy 49 (court appearance) and Lookie Spin (fissures).  In come Dayer, The Hoob, Mikey Spray and Geoff Baselayer.  A somewhat worrying batting line-up sees the Skip and his agricultural mowing at 3 and Jeweller de Vito in at 4.  There are also rumours that the Sunderland boy could make a trip up the order.  Scary shit.

Village win by 95 as Seasick Steve Issues Guitar Up Your Arse Threat as Integrity Questioned

"I got those, 'not over the fucking line bastard' blues...."

Billy Shite at the Parks for the Daily Sporting Arse, reporting on the Mighty Village taking on Black Lapthorn.

Shorn of Dayer and the Hoobard, it was hard to imagine that the average age of the Village line-up could go up but go up it did with the inclusion of WG Clive and Seasick Steve who have a combined age of about 170. Also making a (welcome) return is Spaul who will be tinkering with his average. He has to settle for a place at No.3 in the batting order with the Guru and Tommy 49 facing the new ball. There is a rumour kicking about that Tommy 49 was arrested at the Rose Bowl for streaking across the pitch and a further rumour that he may try a re-enactment later on today. The Village had to deal with a last minute team change as Mick the Sprayer dropped out due to lack of Viagra and therefore, Seasick Steve retained his place after initially being savagely jettisoned.

As he Skip was standing there in his pants at the time of the toss, Spaul called and won and the Village went into bat. After a relatively tight first over, on came the Blake Lap Skip who had been working at the little known Bakery Division of Blake Lapthorn all day, making pies.... now it was time to serve them up. The Guru, who has been known to be partial to the odd pie, smashed 4 in a row to the boundary, endangering spectators who had their back to the game, watching the other one.

The next 2 overs brought another 20 runs with Tommy 49 getting in on the act and smashing the hapless skipper for 6. Even the Village Skip would have made a bowling change at this stage on the grounds that no one could be any worse and you never know, mixing it up just might work....but they persevered for another 4 overs with the same bowlers and so at the 8 overs half way mark, the Village were 81-0 and no one had even looked like getting out.

Due to his expert strike manipulation, the Guru was first to 50 as the change bowlers came on and served up more pies, a slightly different variety of pie but nonetheless, a pie. It did look for one worrying moment that the Guru was on for a century and would therefore be officially unbearable but, sensing the impending despair that would cause to all, Tommy 49 began to take the strike himself and duly went ballistic, going from 46 to 76 in 8 balls.

Looking round for inspiration, the Blake Lapthorn skipper handed the ball to someone playing in a lab coat who looked like he had one leg about a foot longer than the other and so the carnage continued. Controversial incident ahoy in the 12th over as the bowler completed his action and held onto the ball, running Tommy 49 out when backing up. Umpire Kevmac seemed unsure what to do until Sergeant Major Mackem came roaring over to explain the rules in words of one syllable. In granting a reprieve, the umpire removed the threat of a battery of short pitched bowling when the Village were in the field.

Meanwhile on the Village bench, the Skip was taking his pads off again and trying to persuade WG Clive to put them on but he was having none of it. Spaul was waiting intently, wondering how he was going to rein in this totally alien, 11 runs an over rate that his team were scoring at. Spaul thought he was going in for one ball when Tom, needing two sixes off the last two balls to get 100, skied one and to make a bad day even worse for the Blake Lap skipper, he watched on as his fielder stood under it for a minute before not even getting a touch. A single off the last ball and that was it with the Mighty Village finishing on 181-0 with Tommy 49 on 88 not out (including 5 sixes and 8 fours) and the Guru on 82 not out (including 82 singles)... actually it was including 13 fours. All the Blake Lapthorn bowlers finished with no wickets for loads.

Jeweller de Vito and Mackem Rob started the Village response against Turnbull, the bloke who could bat who they hid down the order last time and an awkward looking bloke who didn’t look like he had a clue. Irritatingly though, the awkward one kept out balls that looked destined to smash his stumps down and though he looked like he was batting with a broom, the breakthrough wouldn’t come in the first 4 overs. On a hunch, the skip brought on Kevmac and he cleaned up Turnbull with his second ball. It look like brilliant captaincy but then you consider that Kev has taken so many wickets this year, it’s a bit like Ricky Ponting throwing the ball to Warne or McGrath.

Mackem Rob tried desperately to improve his averages in the face of total domination and humiliation by Jonjo but after three overs of bad luck was replaced by the Ginger Magician himself, back on the ground where he took a hat-trick with the last three balls he bowled in a straight line. Before JJ could start on his latest exhibition of right arm filth, Kevmac chose the second ball of his over to knock over another batsman and judging by the stance of the incoming No.4, we were now into the tail. JJ into the attack and he started with the predictable big legside wide before being wided again 3 times for balls that were all completely ok. After an hour we got to the end of that over and Kevmac knocked over another two in his next over, with variations of the dead straight wobbly ball that they miss.

At 43-4, JJ came up with his over of genius which makes you think that he should bowl an over as a warm up. Six unplayable deliveries with two of them shattering the stumps of batsmen who seemed resigned to their fate in the eye of the Ginger Whirlwind. Seasick Steve came in from the boundary to congratulate his son with a rather curious ‘what have I created?’ question. You should have thought about that 20 years ago Seasick.

Lookie imparted spin from one end as he replaced Kevmac but the danger was from the Ginger end as JJ moved further ahead of Mackem Rob in the averages by knocking over off stump again. A muttered ‘shite gets wickets man’ was all he got in congratulation from the ever generous Northerner. The Blake Lapthorn captain was in now, looking to improve his day and to be fair, he did manage to smite a four off of JJ before causing controversy by basically calling Seasick Steve a liar and demanding a 4 when Seasick had clearly stopped the ball inside the line. What’s the point mate ? you need 120 to win off 4 overs? It's ironic that Blake Lapthorn are a firm of solicitors.  How do you plead, not guilty, hang him.

Lookie stuck one up him anyway with that classic spinners weapon, the arm ball. He bowls it, the batsman knows it not going to spin and then he misses it anyway. In came Polly, the girl of legend from the last match and Lookie very ungallantly chucked a beamer at her head first ball. In an eerie echo of that previous meeting, the Skip had a stumping opportunity off her second ball faced but declined to take the bails off. What’s the point, the umpire wouldn’t have given it.

8 wickets down and three overs left to get the last 2 and it was time for Spaul to rejoin the ranks of the bowlers and buy a wicket when Polly larruped one up in the air to where the Guru pouched the catch. In came the No11 who looked absolutely terrified when faced with the guile of Seasick Steve. To be fair, he did take the pin out before lobbing the grenade and the batsman swatted it up into the air. Time stood still as Seasick Steve and Tommy 49 both called for it not and the chance was gone. Seasick could have had a bowling average of 1 ball, 0 runs, 1 wicket but not to be. The remaining grenades got smashed for a few cheap runs through the ridiculous field with two slips and about 5 other people within 3 yards of the bat.

Last over and one wicket to go with Lookie Spin being the option chosen. With all men around the bat, the first three balls passed with the No11 blocking it out, offering only a sniff of a catch to Mackem Rob who was virtually standing on the wicket before the ball was bowled. Ball 4 kicked up, took the edge and flew past the Skips ear before he moved. Nearly a catch and nearly a trip to hospital. Another dot ball and so to the last ball which was down the leg side and missed. The Skip bizarrely appealed that it was a wide and the umpire agreed, giving the Village one more ball which Lookie didn’t waste, clean bowling the No11 to close the Blake Lapthorn innings on 86 all out and so the Mighty Village won by 95 runs, picking up maximum points in the process.

So, a large win for the Village and on trundles the Juggernaut to next weeks tricky visit to the LCG and a game against Knowle Village.  Tommy 49, Guru, Lookie Spin and JJ Fox are all off on a cricket tour where they will spend all evening waiting for Jonjo to pull and then spend all night listening to him knocking one out.  The Mighty Village will attempt to prevail, even though it could mean recalls for some very dodgy players.  until next time, this is Billy Shite signing off fro the Hoglands Drying Out Tank.

Breaking News: Sperm Sprayer Out

Mike Sperm Sprayer has today been placed on gardening leave to attend a course of rehabilitation at the Sex Addiction clinic in Derby Road. His offence of 'firing indescriminately into a crowd of women' was deemed serious enough for sanctions to be imposed. Giggsy will be missed by his team mates who will proceed on their quest without him. His place in the Village line up will be taken tonight by Seasick Steve, freshly returned from Glastonbury and over his injury from fielding a ball with his arse, last week. Statement Ends. A information in this statement covered by Super Injunction.

Nigel Bottles It

A Bottler, Yesterday

Half-way mark of the season as the Mighty Village take on Blake Lapthorn at the Parks.  The first meeting of the teams this season was notable for the Hoob spitting fury at every opposition player he used to work with, so he's been rested for this game - that's the official line anyway the bottling bastard.  The first match was also notable for a bloke taking 20 minutes to put a helmet on, some comedy fielding (walking over the boundary with the ball and not calling it 4) and the infamous "let her off cos she's a girl" incident.

The Village have 11 men, fair and true for the task at hand and these include the returning Spaul and Jeweller de Vito.  Coming in for his first appearance of the season is Clive Davison who last scored a run in 1974.  He's replacing Dayer in the battng line up who has scored 230 odd this season.  Aside from the Hoob and Dayer, the other player rested is Seasick Steve, currently stuck in the mud at Glastonbury.

6.30, Thursday at Hoglands Park,
Get there early ladies, to reserve your place on Mikey Sperm's lap.
